The main predator of the press in Ukraine in 2008 is the prosecutor general of Ukraine Oleksander Medvedko, as to the conclusions of the yearly monitoring made by IMI and Independent media trade union “Predators of the press-2008”.
This year, the prosecutor general replaced mayor of Kyiv Leonid hernovetskiy, who leaded in this list last year. Actually, the Kyiv mayor took 4th position in the rating. This is for the third time that IMI and the Independent media trade union holds the anti-rating. 50 independent media experts took part in the monitoring. The list of predators of the press-2008 is: 1/Oleksander Medvedko, General prosecutor of Ukraine 2/Yuriy Lutsenko, headn of the Ministry of Internal Affairs 3/Mass media owners 4/Leonid Chernovetskiy, mayor of Kyiv 5/Volodymyr Kovalenko, mayor of Nova Kakhovka (region of Kherson) 6/Serhiy Kivalov, MP 7/Rhinat Akhmetov, MP 8/Yuriy Kuvita, head of the public health administration in Cherkassy region 9/Hanna Shevchuk, head of regional council of Barishevka district (Kyiv region) 10/Mykola Nikituk, member Lutsk municipal council As to Mr Medvedko: 1/ he closed investigation within the case of assault and battery of the journalists for STB TV company by the MP Kalashnikov. Those ones who are responsible for beating are not brought to the account. 2/No progress made in Gongadze investigation (the part concernng those who ordered to kill and instigators of the murder). 3/No response to high-profile crimes comitted against the press. 4/No reaction to raider attack to TV and radio company “CRYM” by Crimean MPs, aiming to obstruct TV program on NATO. As to Mr Lutsenko, minister of internal affairs: 1/he clashed against “1+1” TV channel and the journalist Jean Novoseltsev 3/He allowed assault and battery of photocorrespondents by police during a protest public rally against illegal building up in Kyiv As to media owners: 1/ Firing of journalists and violations of labour law 2/payment of the wages to the journalists in envelopes (in secret) 3/ Breaking regulation of labour law IMI |
